So far so good for the crew of the Atlantis

So far so good for the crew of the Atlantis

So far the NASA mission to Hubble is proving a success, although it is a hard slog.  But who wouldn’t want that job, if only for the view from the office window?

The Hubble telescope was built in 1989 and launched in 1990.  Does anybody still have a camera from that era?  The equiptment in ground control must have been replaced aand updated a  dozen times since then.  So that gives you some idea of the amount of work they have to do.

Nikon 601

Imagine stripping a Nikon F601, first produced in 1989, and rebuilding it with a digital Central Processor Unit, LCD screen and all the internal focusing apparatus you would get in a top-of-the-range camera today.

It hasn’t all been plain sailing either, with several parts refusing to fit into their respective holes, and the second spacewalk went an hour over time.

But the crew are in good spirits and keen to get on with the work.
