Patrick Swayze is not dead – Official

Apparently very much alive

Apparently very much alive

Well the rumours were wrong again – Lord Patrick of Swayze is still with us.

He is, however, having a rough time of it.  Diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer in January 2008, he has been undergoing chemotherapy for months, leading to a bout of pnumonia.  I suspect his healthy lifestyle has contributed to his fighting chances.

Patrick is a more interesting individual that I have, in the past, given his credit for.  I know he was a dancer from a very early age, taking after his mother’s side.  He lost his sister in 1994 (cause unstated) but it led him to get treatment for alcoholism.  In between making movies he has also been a pilot, a skydiver and a horse rancher.

He has been with his wife since they were teenagers, without any apparent infidelity on either side.

His filmography is one sharp peaked mountain.  He started out on the stage in the broadway production in Grease.  He later did some TV work leading to a small part in the Civil War epic, North and South.  Then came a small film company called Vestron who were looking for a dancer who could act convincingly for the male lead.  For an apparently small fee he took the lead in 1987’s Dirty Dancing.  The success of the film has been largely covered elsewhere, especially by DD-addict Dawn Porter.  The film revitalized the genre of dance movies and set the hearts pounding of every teenage girl of the time.  To date it has made $300 million worldwide.

It's a girl thing, lads. We will never understand it.

It's a girl thing, lads. We will never understand it.

He later tried, with no great success, to re-invent himself in action films.  He looked out of place as the bouncer in Road House, and even more so as the surfer bad-guy in Point Break.  He was never born to play the bad guy.  Next to Keanu Reeves he never seemed to embrace his role.

After that he dissappeared from films for a while to concentrate on his horses and personal life.  He returned in a small part in Donnie Darko before the diagnosis for cancer was given.

Don't believe everything you read.

Don't believe everything you read.

Since 2008 he has been announced as dead on more than one occasion, much to his personal annoyance, and I don’t blame him.  But he is still hanging on, maybe the dancing nancy I was dragged to see as a lad is tougher than I thought.

P.S. This doesn’t sound like an obituary does it?
